Everything I Needed to Know about Dating I learned from a 3rd Grader

9-year Old Author Reveals Secrets of Picking Up Girls (Link to video)

Forget the psychologists and relationship experts, guys. If you really want to know how to meet girls, snuggle up to a clever little book written by 9-year-old love guru Alec Greven.

A year ago, Greven was just another third-grader with a writing assignment at Soaring Hawk Elementary School in Castle Rock, Colo.

“We got to write whatever we want, and I chose to write about girls,” Alec told TODAY’s Meredith Vieira Thursday in New York.

Here's an excerpt from his book, "How to Talk to Girls":

If you are in elementary school, try to get a girl to like you, not to love you. Wait until middle school to try to get her to love you. Otherwise, you have to hold on to her for a long time and that would be very hard.

Tip: Most boys in elementary school can hold on to a girl for only 30 days.

Don't you wish your kid was in public school gaining valuable knowledge like this?

I can honestly say, it doesn't take public school for boys to think these things, thats just how God made boys, to REALLY like girls. At least he was waiting till middle school to try and hang on, thats funny, you have to enjoy the innocence of kids!! He does have the right order, you get a girl to like you...then to love you...then to hang on!!!! He's innocent right now, being only 9, it's not till middle school that you usually have to worry about the public school boys!

Tracy, do you really think this is an example of innocence? I didn't see it that way.

Well, my point is more that this doesn't just happen in the public school, it happens in co-ops, church, you name it, not just the public school. It's up to the parent now, to guide him into whats right, what is appropriate to talk about or do. But at least theres no secrets here, I'd rather know what my son thinks, then for him not to share. And having a son almost that age myself, yeah, I could say that if he had thoughts about girls, they'd be totally innocent. Not all kids in public school are bad, just curious, so now the parents can set him straight. I don't see anything wrong with wanting a girl to like you, that means friends, because he did say, "not to love you." I don't know, I guess I just read it different. And know that there can be worse things said at church.

I watched both the videos of this little boy on the Today Show. That was completely disgusting and it made my stomach turn. Since when should 8yo be worried about relationships and how to "get the girl"?

This is not about friendship and/or showing Christ's love this was about romantic encounters in 3rd grade!!! Clearly the boy (and all kids his age) have no CLUE what it means to have a romantic relationship and the thought that they are trying to find one is appalling not cute or "innocent".

He even says something about dating at age 8 and you know, if you want to start pursuing girls at age 3, then go for it!! No wonder we need sex ed in Kindergarten!!

Tracy, What do you mean "It's up to the parent now to guide him?" Who do you think drove him to studio 1A to be on the Today Show? And as a homeschool parent with SIX children ages 8 and up I can tell you that NONE of my kids would ever pull the insane idea of "dating" out of the air. This kid is just regurgitating what his parents and peers have fed him and encouraged to grow.

And I happen to know MANY older homeschooled kids that have a firm grasp of what dating and relationships entail and they know they are NOT ready for it. Good job, Alec (and his idiot parents) for showing us all how to start (VERY) early with our meaningless, shallow and short lived relationships. And we wonder why the youth of this generation just don't care about anyone. DUH!!

Well, first of all, I only read the little insert here on the blog, so it appeared to look like he was talking about friends, I do agree that having him on TV was ridiculous. But didn't watch it, didn't know there was a site to go to from here. So sorry, didn't mean to cause a stir with you guys, can't even make a judgement call without watching it, I don't watch this junk because thats all it does is get you all riled up. So my comments were based totally on the blue section here. But I do think calling his parents idiots wasn't to Christian either, they are after all sinners. So sorry Katie, didn't watch it, bad assumption on my part. We don't have TV here in our house, but wouldn't watch these shows anyway because they're so liberal.

We like the stir! I love debating on here! Stir it up, Tracy!
(The videos are linked in the title of the article- Katie doesn't have TV either ;) )

Tracy,
You really thought Ginger was saying we should home school our kids because some boy wrote a book about how to be friends with girls? "Secrets of Picking up Girls" is not exactly an innocuous article title, is it? I suppose the sequel would be how to make friends with boys? Seems someone has their head in the sand.

As for his parents being idiots I stand by that statement just as the Pharisees were called a brood of vipers. And I guess you've never been an idiot? I have been so maybe that is how I recognized it so easily in Alec's parents.

I'm still trying to figure out why this material is even book worth???? I heard about it on the radio; they were reading excerpts and laughing it up. My kids looked at me like, "Why is this funny? Why did they waste the paper?" I don't get it!

Some adults must have seen humor in what should be really disturbing. Take the blinders off your eyes, parents! Good grief!
