Utilities Savings: Your Hot Water Heater

Go check your hot water heater's settings. I'll bet it's set to hot or very hot. Sometimes, dishonest plumbers will set your new hot water heater to "very hot" in order to wear it out sooner, thus needing him again soon. If you find your hot water heater set that high and you aren't the one who set it there, find a new plumber.
Lower your temperature settings and see if you notice any difference. If you don't, lower them again.
I now have my set to "warm" and I haven't noticed any loss at all. And I LOVE the savings on my gas bill! I think you will too!

Even better, get a tankless hot water heater. We have saved tons by installing one in our new house and we only have hot water(at the temp. we choose) when we need it. No running out of hot water either!

Totally agree if you're building a new house. Doesn't work to retrofit an existing house. ;)

When we lower our temp in the wintertime, we run out of hot water by the end of one shower. Even when it is set to very hot, we run out! Maybe we need a new water heater? We have two water heaters and it's better with the downstairs heater. Sigh. I wonder if I should call a plumber.

I also heard that if you go out of town, you can turn off the hot water heater while you are gone to save money, but we haven't tried that yet.

Our hot water heater has a vacation setting. Honestly I haven't put much thought into the cost. We have always had ours set low as a safety issue with the kids.
