Herb of the Week - Horehound

This is one of our favorites. Horehound Extract is our anti-ear infection herb of choice. My kids have never needed an antibiotic for ear infections because of Horehound. Research shows that the recurrence of ear infections increases significantly (80% from what I remember) the earlier antibiotics are given, so avoiding antibiotics is important to us. Horehound strengthens the lungs and acts as an expectorant, so it also makes hacking coughs productive, which everyone seems to have right now.
Horehound Blend by 'Herbs for Kids' is our favorite brand as it is an alcohol-free tincture. I give the babies 1 dropperful, and the bigger kids get 2 droppersful. Lydia actually loves the flavor of it! I think it tastes like licorice.

Hey, I did have some after all! So, how often do you give it to the kids for a cough?
Ever heard of Butter bur?

According to the bottle, I give it 3x/day. It has helped everyone's cough. I went to Whole Foods recently to get more and they didn't have it. I got Cherry Bark Blend instead. It is also an expectorant and includes Horehound.
Never heard of Butter Bur. I'll look that one up. What do you use it for?

Just found "Butterbur Root" on Mountain Rose Herbs (.com)
Very interesting! I'll have to add that to my list of herbs for allergies/asthma.
Thanks!

ooh, great bit of knowledge to store away. Incidentally, I'd love it if you'd post a blog entry sometime about what herbs/supplements you give your kids on a daily/weekly basis. We do a multi and that's about it.

I did a bit of mayo clinic research on butter bur and found that you need to get PA free kind, so it doesn't have the toxins in it. I have to research before using, b/c herbs/supplements can have side-effects just like meds.
