Bad Medicine

In an unmistakably insecure and aggressive move, the American Medical Association (AMA) adopted a resolution at its annual meeting last weekend to introduce legislation outlawing home birth - according to The Big Push for Midwives.

What the AMA's resolution and these other kinds of potential and actual legislation do is to open the door to penalizing motherhood, in effect. Because most of these legislative attempts do not directly address the issue, they leave the door dangerously open to criminalizing women for making the decisions they feel are best for themselves, their babies and their families.

I fail to see how these people who are *proCHOICE* think they can also tell us WHERE to have our babies, who we chose NOT to *terminate* for convenience, like they thought we should.

I haven't had a homebirth but I would like the right to choose where I birth my child and who is in attendance.

FYI:

Here is the entire AMA position paper and resolution in document form: http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/

Scroll down the page resolution 205.

These have not passed but are actively being pushed to pass. The AMA *is* funding the push .

The best thing to do *IMO* would be to contact your congress person and make sure they are aware of what the AMA is up to. And let them know about your views of home birth and how you think they should be regulated.

All that would really serve to do is drive homebirths underground - I mean all you'd have to do is give birth then say you couldn't make it to the hospital in time. I don't think this really stands a good chance of success.

Do you know what is behind this? Are they saying that homebirths are "more dangerous than hospital births" in their opinion or do they even have a reason for this resolution? I wonder where they get their information--if they have any stats at all.
How sad that they feel they have to make a law b/c of the healthy choices that people make that limit their income in the hospitals. I'm still in shock that they are attempting this--although in a world where same-sex marriages are fought for and granted(as of today--California and Vermont--it's legal-YIKES), why am I surprised at the evil in this world?
