I Am Done With Crayons

I got fed up with broken and dull crayons. So I switched to twist-up crayons. New problem: the twist mechanism often breaks and then you are stuck with a full-size, but useless crayon. FORGET IT!
I have found something infinitely better and you are going to praise the day I let you in on my secret. Are you ready for this?

Colored pencils! If they get dull, you sharpen them. They don't melt. And if they break, then the child to blame can buy a new set. ;)

I love them!

We've done this too.. actually, we kept the crayon tub but its not pulled out daily anymore. It's great for when other people come over and I've got 15 kids around the table coloring. The colored pencils are for "school" coloring and for taking in the car.

My children prefer colored pencils over crayons as well. I still get crayons, especially when they are just a quarter at back to school time. They make a good gift, if nothing else.

I agree. However there are some crafts, like leaf rubbings, where crayons work much better. My kids think colored pencils are so far ahead of crayons. Even my four year old prefers them and thinks she's big stuff using colored pencils.

We LOVE colored pencils around here! Emily loves getting to sharpen them herself with my electric sharpener (good sensory input too!), or with her hand held one in the car. We still use crayons very often though, and she prefers the twist up type, or the triangle shaped ones. We always keep drawing supplies in the car to help with boredom, and I prefer to keep colored pencils there so I never have to worry about melting due to the Texas heat!
